AEO for ecommerce: how to get your products recommended by AI
Online stores get recommended by AI models when product information is structured with schema.org, prices are accurate and consistent across channels, and genuine customer reviews exist somewhere outside their own website. Without these three things, the model has little reliable information to cite, and picks a product from a competitor who has done the work instead.
Why the competition is tougher for e-commerce
Ask ChatGPT something like "best running shoes for flat feet" or "cheapest robot vacuum under NOK 3,000", and there are usually dozens of alternatives out there. The model cannot list them all. It tends to pick three to five products it feels confident recommending, and everything else becomes invisible in that answer, no matter how good the product actually is. That makes AEO for e-commerce a competition to be among the few, not just to exist at all.
What a model needs to recommend a product
- Product markup (schema.org) with price, availability and rating, so the facts about the product are explicit instead of something the model has to guess at.
- Consistent pricing across channels: your own website, Google Shopping and any comparison services should show the same figure.
- Genuine reviews on sites outside your own. A model trusts a rating it finds elsewhere more than the stars you have added yourself.
- Product descriptions that answer real buying questions, like "is this suitable for sensitive skin" or "how long does the battery last", not just marketing phrases.
- Up to date stock status. Models prefer not to recommend something that turns out to be sold out.
You don't need to write Product markup by hand. Our schema generator builds correct code from the product information you already have, without anyone on the team needing to learn schema.org syntax.
A wrong price is worse than no price
A model that recommends a product at the wrong price damages its own credibility with the user, and models are built to avoid exactly that. If the price on your website, in the Google Shopping feed and on a comparison service doesn't match, it's safer for the model to skip you than to risk being wrong. Check this regularly, especially after promotions and seasonal price changes.
Reviews carry more weight than your product copy
As we cover in How to get your business found in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, Claude and Gemini in particular weight what other people say about a product heavily, not just what you write in the description yourself. A handful of quality reviews on reputable platforms outside your own website carries more credibility than a long list of self-produced marketing copy.
A concrete checklist for your online store
- Add Product schema to every product page, with price, availability and rating.
- Make sure price and stock status are identical on your website, in product feeds and with any reseller partners.
- Collect genuine reviews on at least two platforms outside your own website.
- Rewrite product descriptions that consist only of marketing language, and answer the questions customers actually ask before buying instead.
- Keep monitoring over time. Competitors change, and a single answer from a model is a snapshot, not a guarantee. ModelSaid monitors this continuously so you know whether your products are still being recommended next month.
