7 common mistakes that make your business invisible to AI
Most businesses that are invisible in AI answers aren't making one big mistake, but a combination of smaller ones that together make the model too cautious to mention them. Here are the seven most common, from the most damaging to the least, and what you can do about each one.
1. Contradictory facts across the web
The website says one thing, the Google Business profile says something else, and an industry directory says a third thing. A model that can't determine what's correct usually chooses not to guess. Go through every place the business is listed and make the information identical.
2. Robots aren't let in
A robots.txt setup that unintentionally blocks crawlers, or a website that depends on JavaScript with no fallback content, can make the page invisible to tools that don't run a full browser. This is a technical mistake that's easy to overlook, but it effectively removes you from the entire conversation.
3. No structured data
Without schema.org markup, the model has to infer what the business does instead of reading it explicitly. Our schema generator is a fast way to close this gap without writing any code yourself.
4. Content written for skimmers, not for models
A lot of website copy is written in buzzwords: "market leading", "best quality", "tailored solution". That says nothing concrete a model can cite. Instead, write direct answers to the actual questions customers ask, like "what does this cost" or "how long does it take".
5. No outside credibility
If everything that exists about the business is written by you, the model has no independent confirmation to lean on. Genuine customer reviews, press coverage and industry listings carry more weight than your own marketing copy, as we also mention in How to get your business found in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity.
6. Assuming visibility based on Google ranking
Many businesses assume they're visible in AI answers because they rank well in Google. The correlation is weaker than most people think. We cover why in Why doesn't ChatGPT mention your business?
7. Measuring once and forgetting about it
AI answers change as models get updated and as your competitors work on the same thing. A check done six months ago tells you little about the situation today. Without ongoing monitoring, you rarely notice a change before someone else does.
How to fix it in practice
- Start with a concrete check, not an assumption, through a free AI visibility check.
- Fix contradictory facts and technical access first, since that's often the cheapest and fastest.
- Add structured data and rewrite the weakest content to answer questions directly.
- Build up genuine third-party reviews over time, rather than trying to force it.
- Set up ongoing monitoring so you actually know whether the effort is working. ModelSaid does exactly this.
