Fundamentals
Why should AI know about my business?
AI does not need to "see" your company for its own sake. The business reason is that customers now use answer engines to discover, compare and verify suppliers. If those systems cannot find clear, credible facts about you, your company can disappear from the consideration set or be described incorrectly.
Where AI visibility affects the buying journey
- Discovery: "Which providers offer this service in my country?"
- Shortlisting: "Which of these options suits a small company?"
- Verification: "Does this provider support our time zone and required integrations?"
- Comparison: "What is the difference between provider A and provider B for this use case?"
These are not all search queries in the traditional sense. Some assistants answer from model knowledge, some retrieve current web pages, and some combine both. That is why a single Google position cannot tell you whether your business will appear in the answer.
What makes a company easier for an answer engine to understand
Begin with a crawlable website and explicit facts: who you serve, the countries or regions you operate in, what you provide, and where the limits are. Keep those facts consistent across your own pages and trustworthy third-party sources. Structured data can reduce ambiguity for parsers, but it is not a guaranteed AI ranking factor and cannot compensate for weak evidence.
- A descriptive About page that names the legal business, category, countries served and contact details.
- Service or product pages that answer eligibility, price-range, compatibility and availability questions.
- Independent evidence such as reputable directories, editorial coverage, certifications and genuine reviews.
- Accessible technical foundations: useful pages return normally, important content is present in HTML, and crawler rules match your actual policy.
Use questions a real customer would ask
A useful test set includes the buyer need, the category, and geographic context. "Best accountant" is too vague for most companies. "Accountants experienced with US subsidiaries in Berlin" is closer to a real decision and produces evidence you can act on.
- Write three discovery questions using the customer need, category, and country or region.
- Write three verification questions about price, compatibility, availability or qualifications.
- Run the same questions across several models and record mentions, factual errors and cited sources.
- Repeat the test over time. One answer is a snapshot, not market share.
What a good result actually looks like
Success is not merely seeing the company name. The description should be accurate, the recommendation should fit the question, and any supporting sources should be verifiable. Track mention rate, factual accuracy, sentiment, recommendation position and which alternatives appear instead. Those measures tell you whether AI visibility is helping a buyer make the right decision, rather than just producing a vanity mention.
