Is SEO dead? No, AEO adds a new visibility layer
SEO is not dead. Search engines still drive discovery, and many AI answers rely on web search or indexed sources. What has changed is the unit customers consume: instead of evaluating ten links, they may receive a synthesized answer and a very short list of options. Answer engine optimization (AEO) measures and improves that answer layer.
Why "SEO is dead" is the wrong diagnosis
AI assistants do not all retrieve information in the same way. A response may come from training data, a live search index, a set of cited pages, or a combination. When retrieval is involved, crawlability, relevance, authority and useful page content still determine what evidence is available. Removing SEO foundations would make the AEO problem harder, not easier.
What remains shared between SEO and AEO
- Pages need to be accessible, fast enough to use, and understandable without hidden context.
- Content needs to answer a real need with specific, supportable information.
- Clear information architecture and internal links help both people and machines find the right evidence.
- Independent authority still matters. A claim repeated only on your own website is weaker than a claim corroborated by a trustworthy source.
What AEO adds
A generated answer creates outcomes that a classic rank tracker does not capture. Your company may be mentioned without a click, cited but not recommended, described with an outdated fact, or omitted while a lower-ranking competitor appears. AEO adds question-level testing and measures the content of the answer itself.
- Mention rate across a stable set of buyer questions.
- Recommendation position and share of voice against relevant competitors.
- Factual accuracy, including products, locations, audience and availability.
- Citations and source quality when the answer engine exposes them.
- Differences between knowledge-only and web-grounded answers.
A sensible combined workflow
- Keep technical SEO, useful landing pages and legitimate authority building.
- Add concise direct answers and explicit facts where buyers need them.
- Use schema markup where it accurately represents visible page content; do not add markup for facts users cannot verify.
- Test representative prompts across several answer engines and save the complete responses.
- Prioritize changes based on observed omissions and errors, then retest the same questions.
Do not replace one vanity metric with another
A mention is not automatically valuable, just as a ranking is not automatically revenue. Use questions that reflect actual customer decisions, segment them by country and customer type, and inspect accuracy as well as visibility. The goal is to help a qualified buyer reach a well-supported conclusion, not to force the brand name into every possible answer.
