Grounded vs. ungrounded AI: why web search changes the answer
Grounding describes whether an AI model retrieves information from a real-time search before answering, or whether it relies solely on what it learned during training. A grounded answer can reflect changes to your website within days, while an ungrounded answer can stay unchanged for months even after major changes on your end. Knowing which type of answer you are being judged by determines how quickly you can expect results from your actions.
What grounding actually means
A training-based (ungrounded) model answers from a static snapshot of the internet, captured during a training run that happened months or years ago. Everything that has happened since that knowledge cutoff is invisible to the model, unless it is connected to a search tool. A grounded model, on the other hand, actually retrieves updated information at the moment it answers, typically via a connected web search, and can therefore reflect changes that happened just days ago.
How the three major models handle this
- ChatGPT uses web search when the question requires fresh facts or when the user explicitly asks for it, but falls back on training data for general questions.
- Gemini is tightly integrated with Google Search and uses real-time data more often by default, especially for local and fact-based questions.
- Claude relies primarily on training data, but can retrieve real-time information when connected to search tools, depending on which version and interface it is used through.
This means the same question can produce a grounded answer in one model and a purely training-based answer in another, even though the question is identical. We touch on this in How your business becomes visible in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity as well.
Why this changes everything for your expectations
If you have just corrected conflicting information, added structured data or gained a new third-party mention, a grounded answer may reflect this quickly, often within days to a few weeks. An ungrounded answer, on the other hand, will remain unchanged until the model is retrained or connected to search, which can take months. Expect rapid change without distinguishing between these two, and you will often end up thinking an action did not work, when it simply has not had time to take effect yet.
How to check for yourself whether an answer is grounded
- Ask the model about something recent and verifiable, for example an opening hour or an offer you changed a short time ago.
- Compare the answer with what actually appears on your website today.
- Ask the model to cite sources or dates for the information, if it supports that. Many grounded answers explicitly state which websites they drew from.
- Repeat the test across all three models, since grounding behavior varies significantly between them.
What to do with this insight
If you are primarily visible in grounded answers, that means ongoing, fresh content and updated third-party mentions produce the fastest effect. If you are primarily judged by ungrounded models, you should be patient with your actions, and instead focus on making sure the content that eventually ends up in a future training run is as solid as possible.
